Londesborough Park’s top of the table clash against
Beverley Town proved to be an interesting affair with both teams
enjoying dominant periods of the game until the weather ultimately had
the final say.
Skipper Charlie Rook’s decision to field first following an earlier
shower failed to pay initial dividends as the opening attack of Rich
Foster and Mark Tissiman gained no assistance from the conditions, the
pitch or the Leakes Butchers sponsored ball. However a little
precipitation, causing a reduction of 6 overs per side, produced the
required deviation and Richard Todd paid the penalty, caught by Sam
Medley for 10. A smart piece of fielding by Michael Drewery resulted in
the demise of Abid, run out for 24 and, with no addition to the score,
the visitors lost a further two wickets. Run scoring was at a premium
and with only a nominal addition the Park claimed two more victims as
Tissiman had Rob Todd safely caught by the skipper and Fossy took his
personal tally to four taking a return catch to send powerhouse Goforth
packing for a duck. Thompson and Fleming combined to produce the
visitors’ most productive partnership of 54 before Mike Davies
intervened to end Fleming’s resistance and Blaster added to his list of
scalps behind the sticks to give Davies a second wicket. Thompson’s
fine knock of 43 was eventually ended by Rook leaving the Park requiring
137 for victory.
Refreshments with a spicy alternative failed to have an impact on the
top order as former Hornsea paceman Lewis and Dobson wreaked havoc,
reducing the Park to 7 for 4. Ben Lewis and Mark Tissiman gained a
brief respite until the former joined his colleagues in the hutch with a
meagre 22 showing in the runs column. Davies and Tissy edged the total
towards the half century mark but Lewis effectively put paid to the
Park’s chances of victory with the dismissals of Tissy and Drewery. 49
for 7 would not have persuaded a chance visitor that the batting side
was heading for anything but defeat. However a productive partnership
between Davies and Blaster gave the sizeable crowd value for money (if
they’d actually paid) with a display of powerful hitting and watchful
defence. All good things must come to an end though and Davies
unfortunately dragged a harmless delivery onto his stumps and departed
for 31. Yogi Youngman holed out to cover leaving Blaster and Foster to
survive 10 overs or accumulate an unlikely 53 runs in descending gloom.
As luck would have it the gloom materialised into a steady downpour
giving the umpires little alternative but to abandon the encounter.
A
little unfortunate for the visitors but what goes round comes round as
they had escaped a probable defeat at the Park thanks to the weather a
couple of seasons ago. The Britcom sponsored Park remain in 3rd
place in Division 2 but must find improved form with the willow to
retain this lofty status.
