Fishpond Field in Carlton was the scene of high drama
last Saturday as Londesborough Park’s fixture against Carlton Towers
reached its conclusion. Set a total of 190 for victory the home side
produced a solid opening partnership of 44 dominated by Dilks until Mark
Tissiman bowled all-rounder Wright for 9. This breakthrough sparked a
flurry of wickets as the spin of Sam Medley accounted for 3 of the top 4
batsmen in quick succession, including Dilks for 47. Yogi Youngman then
claimed his first scalp to reduce Carlton to 65 for 5 and everything
began to look rosy in the garden. However wicket keeper Ellin had other
ideas and, ably assisted by Denby, took the score into three figures
before Charlie Rook bowled the latter for 15. Ellin found another ally
in Spence and with 139 on the board the contest became evenly balanced.
The scales were however tipped quickly back into the Park’s camp as
Ellin was run out for 47. Rook and Youngman soon had Nos. 8 and 9 back
in the sheds and the final over approached with the board showing 146
for 9. Tissiman was entrusted with the cherry but No. 10 Boddye remained
unmoved for 5 balls. His joy at not having to play at the final
delivery was short lived as the umpire’s outstretched arms indicated a
wide and, yes you’ve guessed it, the ‘Ginger One’ hit the stumps to
record the Park’s 9th victory of the season. Boddye was not
amused and flattened the stumps with his boot – unlucky son. All the
Park’s bowlers chipped in with the exception of Mike Davies who more
than made up for it with a spectacular catch on the boundary.
The
Park had initially struggled earlier in the day as a damp, bowler
friendly wicket accounted for Sam Medley and Callum Robertson, elevated
to the 1st XI in the absence of farming Big Bird, with only 8
on the board. Skipper Charlie Rook then produced one of his best knocks
for some time as he and Neil Stephenson dominated with an excellent
partnership of 143. As so often happens both were dismissed together,
Rook for 79 and Stephenson for 49, causing the innings to lose impetus.
Of the remaining batsmen only Tissiman managed to reach double figures
in a final total of 189 which, whilst competitive, should probably have
started with a 2.
Bottom club Scarborough 2nds visit the Park this weekend but nothing
will be taking for granted as the Britcom sponsored 1st XI
continue their quest for back to back promotions.
