It
was a case of ‘after the Lord Mayor’s Show’ for Londesborough Park’s 1st
XI last Saturday as they travelled to Osbaldwick safe in the knowledge
that promotion to Division 1 was ‘in the bag’.
Faced with a wet wicket at The Leyes skipper Charlie Rook knew the toss
would be crucial and for once his luck deserted him. The Park’s top
order found the going tough, particularly after the loss of Big Bird in
the first over. Sam Dodd, Neil Stephenson and Pilot Nettleton faired
little better as the home side’s bowling attack dominated proceedings,
reducing the Park to 16 for 4 in the 12th over. Life became
somewhat easier as the wicket dried out and a 60 run partnership between
Rook (26) and Mike Davies lifted the gloom. Mark Tissiman continued the
good work with Davies following Rook’s demise until Davies was caught
for 44. Supporting cameos from Jonathon Croft and Blaster Barlow saw
the board displaying 153 at the end of the reduced innings of 40 overs,
Tissiman providing the highest contribution with an undefeated 47.
The
use of the heavy roller during the tea interval created some mirth and
puzzled comments in the Park’s ranks and an early breakthrough for
Davies appeared to confirm that rolling a drying wicket was not plan A
for the batting side. Rich Foster and Davies both struck with the score
on 25 but the home groundsman obviously knew his turf better than most
as once again the wicket became batsman friendly and Osbaldwick eased to
72 before Carwe was run out for 26. Horner and Bispham then decided the
slower pace of Yogi Youngman, Charlie Rook and Mark Tissiman’s
‘alternatives’ was there for the taking and plundered 82 runs in the
next 12 overs to breeze to a 6 wicket victory. Maybe the bowling was
akin to the pies produced by the match ball sponsor Holmemade Bakery!
The
Britcom sponsored Park still head the Division despite this setback and
require a minimum of 20 points from this Saturday’s final fixture at
home to New Earswick to claim the championship.
