Both Londesborough Park teams faced West Riding
opposition last week in the guise of Whitkirk, one being rather more
successful than the other.
On
the outskirts of the city with a 3rd division football team
the 1st XI was offered first knock on a wicket suffering the
after affects of moss kill. Regular openers Big Bird and Sam Medley
produced a healthy run rate without alarm until Big Bird edged to the
keeper for 20. The introduction of spinner Walker then turned a
promising start into a bit of a nightmare as too many batsmen failed to
cope with erratic deliveries, surrendering to full tosses and long hops
with disappointing regularity. Sam, who had blitzed the opening attack,
steered a poor ball into the gully and departed for 31 and the middle
order of Davies, Rook and the ‘Ginger One’ all failed to make an
impact. Michael Drewery’s promising innings of 20 was also terminated
by Walker as the Park slumped to 96 for 6. Jonathon Croft did manage
double figures but it was the extras column which took the honours of
second highest scorer as the innings petered out in the 39th
over on 130, courtesy of Walker’s slightly flattering figures of 6 for
53.
An
immediate impact was called for after the tea interval and the ‘Ginger
One’ duly obliged, sending both openers back with only 6 on the board.
However Handley and Gommerson produced a result defining partnership of
68 until both lost their wickets to Yogi Youngman and Charlie Rook with
the score stuck on 74. The same bowler then claimed a wicket apiece
with the score on 95 courtesy of a second well taken catch by Drewery
and one by Tissiman. Two further catches by Croft and Youngman off the
skipper’s bowling saw the home side struggling on 108 for 8 and the Park
on course to secure an unlikely victory. Tissiman dismissed Danby with
5 required but Johnson held his nerve to guide the Loiners home by one
wicket.
A
performance of two halves, the first best described as ‘pants’ and the
second more akin to The Park’s early season displays. A timely reminder
that this is division 2 and a performance of concentration and
application will be required this weekend when the Britcom boys face
league leaders Beverley Town. Thanks to match ball sponsor Morrison.

Whitkirk 133-9 (P Handley 46, C Rook 4-34, M Tissiman 3-24)
