Match Report

Londesborough Park's 1st XI started life in the second division of the York senior league with a home fixture against the cliff top boys from Sewerby, another club with Llamas in close attendance to the ground. T-shirts and numerous sweaters were left at the bottom of bags as the season commenced in glorious conditions with the park looking resplendent following the hard work of the many club members pre-season.

The visitors elected to field first and park openers Big Bird and Sam Medley emerged from the newly extended pavilion to do battle. A solid start was curtailed when Sam was caught for 6 with the score on 33. Skipper Charlie Rook joined Big Bird and the left hand right hand pairing looked comfortable against Sewerby attack. Big Bird survived a confident stumping appeal, the umpire clearly distracted by the beauty of his surroundings (or was it the Llamas) but fell shortly later to a dubious LBW decision for a solid 29. Ben Lewis stepped into the breach and enjoyed the parks most productive partnership of the innings, adding 79 with the skipper before being caught for an encouraging 39. New recruit Mike Davies decided attack was the best form of defence and attempted to club the first delivery towards Market Weighton. He survived, but not for long, which brought the ginger one to the crease. He chipped in with 15 as Charlie moved serenely on at the other end. Sam Dodd maintained the momentum with 17 as the scoreboard moved beyond 200. With two deliveries of the innings remaining Charlie had registered 92 not out. A six and a brace ensured a splendid, chanceless red inker of 100 not out - not a bad way to start the season! A final tally of 223-6 gave the visitors food for thought, and good food it was at the tea interval.

Rich Foster and the Ginger one took control of the new ball and soon has the opposition reeling. Skipper Chris Briggs edged to Blaster Barlow behind the sticks for 12 to give Tissy his 1st wicket. The same combination did for Beesley shortly afterwards and opener Dobson was caught by the skipper off Foster to put the park in a strong position. Better was to come as Jennsion became the first of two victims of Sam 'the gully' Dodd. departing for a duck, leaving the visitors struggling on 32-4. Blaster safely held his third catch to give Fossy a deserved second wicket and key batsman Artley was undone by Tissy to leave the visitors floundering on 60-6. They were eventually put out of their misery by Sam Medley whose pre-season work on his leg spin was rewarded with 2-8 and debutant Mike Davies, bowling at pace, claimed 2-5 from his 3 overs.

Unfortunately Tom Eagling was denied chance to turn his arm over as he pulled a fetlock in the deep but a disciplined performance in the field be the whole team resulted in the visitors being dismissed for just 97. A perfect start for the Park and the skipper as the 1st XI look to cement their position in the league at their highest level since joining the league in 1998.

Thank to the main sponsors Britcom International Limited, Match ball sponsor Hagston Carpets and everyone who has helped in preparing the ground and assisted on a special day for the park who travel to Tadcaster Magnet on Saturday whilst the 2nd XI commence their seasons action with a home fixture against Cawood II.

LPCC 223-6 (C Rook 100 No., J Williamson 29, B Lewis 39, A Rennoldson 3-50) Sewerby 97 (M Tissiman 4-26)
