Match Report

A blank weekend for the 1st XI caused the focus of attention to switch to the twos’ fixture against Tadcaster Magnet’s second string at Londesborough Park last Saturday.  Punters flocking to York races created mayhem amongst the visitors’ travelling arrangements with only 6 present at the start.  Surprisingly the Magnet’s skipper elected to field first but umpire Blakey Botting utilised common sense and waited for the stragglers to arrive.

Openers Callum Robertson and Michael Drewery enjoyed a first wicket partnership of 40 before the latter departed LBW for 20.  Damian Sharp looked set for the day but Madin had other ideas, bowling him for 24 with the score on 92.  What followed had the statisticians reaching for their record books as Robertson and Sam Medley accumulated 146 for the third wicket.  Unfortunately Sam’s luck ran out on 86 when he was caught but Callum remained stoically at the crease.  He and Ben Lewis continued the stream of runs as the drama unfolded to the last ball of the innings.  With 2 required for his maiden Londesborough Park ton Callum duly obliged to rapturous applause from his team mates and spectators alike.  Ben finished with a red inker of 30 as the Park amassed the biggest total of the day in the York League and deputising skipper Steve Mudd was justified in allowing both Sam and Callum the opportunity to achieve their milestones when temptation to declare was never far away.

With a mere 287 required for victory the Magnet reply understandably lacked ambition but opening pacemen Dan ‘the man’ Howard and Dazzler Moody cared not a jot.  However their joint 18 over salvo for few runs went largely unrewarded, Dan’s removal of Madin for 15 being scant reward.  The introduction of Andy Copeland to the attack proved pivotal as the brewery men were cajoled out of their defensive shells into a vain attempt to gain batting points.  No less than 6 batsmen failed to trouble the scorers as Andy ran through them, finishing with outstanding figures of 7 for 26 from 9.2 overs.  Skipper Mudd chipped in with 1-16 as the opposition were dismissed for just 79 with 7 overs to spare.

This victory moves the Pryers sponsored 2nds into forth place in the division prior to this weekend’s away fixture against table toppers Pocklington 2nds whilst the 1st XI, buoyed by last week’s defeat of Beverley by Osbaldwick, also play host to table toppers in the shape of Clifton Alliance 2nd XI.  Thanks to the match ball sponsor The Pet Shop.
