Match Report

The Pryers sponsored 2nd XI made the short trip to local rivals Yapham.  A green looking wicket swayed skipper Hodson to insert the opposition and Dazzler Moody struck early before a rain interruption caused a flurry of activity in the tea room.  Play resumed after the bun fight with the experienced pairing of Geoff Room and Barry Pearson pushing the scoring along to 48 when Rob Sawyer had Pearson caught by James Beevers for 21.  A steady stream of wickets ensued but Room’s 51 held the innings together as Yapham made a respectable 121 for 7 from their allotted 35 overs.  The Robster was the Pick of the Park’s bowlers with 3-50. Dazzler (2-28) and Steve Mudd (1-26) also chipped in and  James Beevers took the fielding honours with 2 catches and a run out.

Another disappointing start to the innings saw the Park fail to make any significant impact as 6 wickets fell for just 35 runs and only skipper Hodson reached double figure (just!). Mirroring their 1st XI counterparts though were Jonathon Croft and Tom Williamson who turned round a hopeless situation into tentative thought of a maximum points haul.  Both batted well, punishing any stray deliveries in a partnership of 58 until Tom was caught and bowled by Gunnell (not Sally).  Dazzler’s immediate run out frayed the nerves and Croft’s determined efforts were finally curtailed by Martin Pearson for 53. Needing 13 for victory Steve Mudd and the Robster almost made it across the line but Pearson’s 5th wicket, bowling Mudd for 12 saw the Park dismissed, agonisingly 2 runs short.

A brave effort in difficult batting conditions but the Park must learn to adapt if they want to prosper.  Thanks to Malc Cartwright for umpiring at both ends, an all too regular occurrence at present.
