The Pryers sponsored second string hosted Welton &
Brough’s 2nd XI in another closely fought encounter with the
visitors just edging it in a tight finale. The Park’s early batsmen
made hay against some wayward bowling and looked set for a big score.
Tom Medley in particular accumulated runs at a pace but after losing
opener Damian Sharp for 21 he lacked support as wickets began to fall
despite the bowling being no more than average. Following Medley’s
departure for an entertaining 51 James Beevers chipped in with a solid
20 but it was left to Tom Eagling and Steve Mudd to produce a late
flurry which resulted in the Park mustering a below par 144, failing
once again to bat the overs out.
A
word or two from the skipper produced an improved effort in the field
and the visiting attack had little answer to the hostile bowling of
Dazzler Moody and Tom Eagling. The run out of Savage reduced Welton to
48 for 5 but keeper Ben Price stood firm and put away any loose
deliveries with support from experienced former Park player Shaun
Wilson. Skipper Ian Hodson turned again to his equivalent of the
‘Rawalpindi Express’ Tom Eagling with instant success as Tom took his
personal tally to six to leave the visitors 9 down with 6 required and
the Park sensing victory. Alas skipper Chappell held his nerve
resulting in defeat by the narrowest of margins for the second week
running.
Yet
again the opposition failed to provide an umpire so thanks to Phil High
for standing at both ends and to match ball sponsor Frances Motors.
