Park Patter (LPCC News and Rumours)

(3rd August 2009)

Londesborough Park gain promotion to Div 1. of the Foss Evening League

With just one remaining 2009 fixture, LPCC received the news that Thixendale CC have conceded the game – unable to raise a team!!

Therefore CONGRATULATIONS go to captain Tom Williamson & his Wednesday night racers

After all the success of the juniors this is more great news for all concerned at the Park

Which team next for promotion??

(3rd August 2009)

Rain beats all teams this weekend

The Met Office was right to take a ‘rain check’ on its prediction of a barbeque summer.  There were no signs of sizzling bangers and burgers at Londesborough or Pocklington as both Park fixtures fell victim of the weather without a ball being bowled.

This week the Britcom sponsored 1st XI travel to Carlton Towers whilst the Pryers sponsored 2nd XI play host to the same opposition’s second string.

(24 July 2009)

Key Visitor comes to the Park

Andrew Watson, Yorkshire Cricket Board, Director of Cricket Development visited us last Friday evening(19th June) –he was due to be at the opening of pavilion representing the ECB (one of  our key  pavilion funders) -but due to family illness was unable to attend.

Andrew was a key supporter to our club when the funding application was made some 4 yrs ago as he held up to date knowledge of our club development work, especially with junior cricket both at the ground & our coaches work in schools.

Andrew works along with our (England Cricket Board) E.C.B. Case Officer Dan Musson who worked on our Pavilion project application, funding & plans etc.

Andrew had a tour of all our facilities and was very impressed with what he saw.

Not just the pavilion but acknowledged the excellent standards of all our facilities inc. Nets/Scoreboard/Coaching Staff/Sightscreens and general good housekeeping inc. the gardens – “a club which should be proud of its achievements”

He sees LPCC as a “role model club” portraying everything good about the development of local cricket for the community

That is why it has attained its  Clubmark and Focus Club Status

Seeing the club coaches, volunteers  & parents in full “Friday Evening Action” on a perfect summers evening gave him great confidence that the investment into our club was sound one!

Andrew even got the replacement - on loan scorers digital key board up & running ready for the Beverley clash next day…….

He was well aware of the many District/Area/ & County Junior Representative Fixtures LPCC are hosting this summer – “what a great place for the youngsters to play”

Opportunities for the future were discussed on the evening (in the goldfish bowl!!) with Secretary Peter Milne & Junior Cricket Coordinator George Drewery

More details of that will be discussed at our next month’s members meeting

A very enlightening visit from a key player in the recent developments and future progress of Londesborough Park

Hog Roast Report

The official opening of Londesborough Park’s pavilion extension took place last Sunday in glorious sunshine.  A junior fixture between the Park and Beeford preceded the formalities at which chairman Robert Rook gave a brief history of the club, outlined the achievements in the last 13 years and thanked grant funders the England and Wales Cricket Board and the R B Massey Trust, builder Stuart Huzzard, the club’s landlord and president Anthony Ashwin and the many club members who had been instrumental in turning another dream into reality, picking out secretary Peter Milne in particular for his unstinting efforts.  Anthony Ashwin then cut the ribbon which was followed by a crowd of over 200 tucking in to a hog roast kindly donated by the Stephenson family and expertly cooked by Big Bird.  Janet Drewery and her helpers ensured no one went hungry whilst George Drewery quenched the visitors’ thirsts behind the bar.  Phil High’s putting competition proved popular as ever with Blaster Barlow claiming the champers after a 5 way play off.  A chance to face the bowling machine drew a regular stream of budding batsmen all afternoon on a day which was a credit to the club, the social committee and the many helpers who contributed.

Hog Roast Highlights

Our past Club Chairman & player  Don Headley now aged 77, gave us a special fly past in a Cessna plane – his passenger taking unique aerial photos of the ground (now to be seen on the LPCC Web) – before landing back at Full Sutton and returning to us for his Hog Roast & Glass of wine!

Don has flown over the ground on match days in the past yrs in the famous Buccaneer Jet as ace test pilot, and also in the historic bi- plane – giving us some great and even frightening displays when returning from air shows throughout the country.

Even took our now current umpire ,ex captain and now a team groundsman – Malc Cartwright on a “flight to frighten” .

Pavilion Extension Background

Grass root cricket attracts local and national funding

Four years of fundraising, hard work and planning (even dreaming) has finally paid off for local cricket club Londesborough  Park.

Gaining Club Mark accreditation from the English Cricket Board (ECB) 3 years ago was the catalyst for our continued development. This is awarded to clubs meeting strict criteria covering such issues as duty of care, child welfare, coaching and competitions, equity in sport, ethics and club management.

Progress continued further when the club was chosen as a Focus Club which entails production of a 5 year development plan, creating links with schools and community groups and supporting area cricket development groups who share best practice, all of which gives higher profile to the game and encourages children to take part with quality coaching support.

Progress with these key awards allowed the club to apply to the ECB for capital funding for a proposed extension to the existing pavilion. After detailed work and various amendments to the original plans the application was finally successful. This left the club needing to raise matching funding support of 25% of the total scheme cost. The club’s management committee turned to the local R.B. Massey Memorial Trust Fund for its support as a partnership funder. After a detailed review of the club’s application on the benefits to the younger children in the local community and the enhancement of the club’s developments, the award was confirmed in May 2007. A key influence on the trustees’ decision was the important ongoing developments and achievements at the club including the fantastic work by the 10 qualified coaches who visit local schools and commit to running 5 junior teams along with weekly introductory sessions to the game via Kwik Cricket.

Work started on the pavilion extension at the end of last season and progressed well despite a hard winter which challenged local builder Stuart Huzzard and his team to be ready for the start of play in April 2009. All worked well and 2 weeks of hard work by club members put the finishing touches to a successful and quality build. The extended pavilion now boasts a dedicated equipment storage area, improvements to the kitchen and 4 changing rooms with showers, toilets and washbasins, all of which can double up as facilities for umpires and separate changing for females and can also accommodate 2 junior matches being played simultaneously. Removable internal walls allow for part or all of the pavilion to be opened up for inside coaching use and for fundraising activities essential to support the day to day running expenses of the club.  Finally the new development includes a superb scorers’ box (the goldfish bowl!) to compliment the previously built high tech digital scoreboard which gives the club a ground and facilities to be proud of. “Yes, it ticks all the boxes” say the York & District Senior Cricket League committee who challenge and encourage all clubs to meet its exacting ground and facility standards.

To compliment the wonderful support from our grant funders the club is proud to be invited this year to host 8 junior area representative fixtures.  Additionally the club has secured further grant aid from the East Riding of Yorkshire Council, Market Weighton Town Council and The Market Weighton Community Charity Shop to compliment its own vibrant fundraising activities. This additional funding has provided 2 new sightscreens along with a much needed refurbishment of the 2 bay outdoor junior coaching nets and improvements to the ground equipment store.
