Londesborough
boys triumph in Cup final
In an exciting final against York CC
held at Woodhouse Grange on Sunday, Londesborough Park won the Hirepoint
York and District Junior Cricket Association under 13 Cup by six wickets
in the penultimate over.
Chasing 106 to win in twenty overs,
Londesborough suffered an early blow when Ben Shingles was bowled in the
first over by the impressive Williams. Stephen Croft gave impetus to
the innings, punishing short bowling from Brewster with some lashing
cuts, before being deceived by Williams (and apparently the
sightscreen), offering a simple chance to ‘keeper Toby Pratt, and
leaving Londesborough in a little bother at 19 for 2 in the fifth over.
The decisive partnership of the
match followed between skipper Will Stephenson and Nathan Saltmer.
Stephenson hit five boundaries in a quick fire 31 before retiring, and
Saltmer, in a very well judged innings, included a six and 3 fours
before also being forced to retire. These two took the score to 69
after just ten overs. With further lusty blows from Joe Shingles,
Londesborough reached 99 for 2 with four overs left and just seven runs
required to lift the trophy. A double wicket maiden bowled by Taylor
followed by just two runs from the next over raised the tension again,
but Lewis Medley and the unflappable Charlie Cartwright remained calm as
apoplexy on the boundary became a distinct possibility. Cartwright
serenely clipped a four in the penultimate over and then smashed the
next ball through the covers for a splendid win by a team defeated just
once in 2010.
Earlier York had started well, with
Brewster driving very strongly, well supported by Pratt, both retiring
unbeaten on 30. Londesborough’s five bowlers all performed well, with
Joe Shingles, Nathan Saltmer and Stephen Croft outstanding. A smart
stumping by Jack Lakin was the only wicket to fall, but York could not
accelerate after a good start, restricted by the Londesborough bowlers,
backed up by aggressive fielding. Toby Stephenson patrolled the
boundary and both Owen Raper and Toby Guest pulled off good stops. This
was a great team effort, and after losing finals at both under 13 and
under 11 in 2009, much deserved silverware for the Londesborough Park
juniors.

CHAMPIONS!!!!
LPCC under
13’s unbeaten league season was completed on Sunday with another
comprehensive victory, this time over Osbaldwick B, leaving
Londesborough as undefeated champions of the York and District Junior
Cricket Association Zone C.
This season
has seen nine convincing victories in cup and league and just one
rained off. Big matches are now starting – beginning with the cup
semi-final at Clifton Alliance on Sunday. If we keep our winning streak
going there are four consecutive Sundays of play-offs, semis and finals
coming up, with much stronger opposition expected.
Remarkably,
every league match has taken the same course: we have batted first,
dominating the opposition (with the possible exception of Thixendale),
taken early wickets, and polished the opposition off with our wily
spinners and some excellent catching and run-outs.

LPCC 74-6 Thixendale 39 all out
Thixendale provided a sterner test and some worries for Londesborough.
Batting first again early wickets for presaged a healthy stand between
James Hanley and Will Stephenson which took the score beyond 50 before
James retired after a commanding knock and Will was well run out. The
innings stuttered as batsmen struggled against accurate bowling, a slow
outfield and tight fielding, before Jack Lakin and Joe Shingles added
impetus at the end. Thixendale clearly fancied their chances, but two
wickets in the first over bowled by Will put things in perspective; the
Shingles bowled in miserly fashion to add three more, reducing the home
side to 22 for 6, and then Owen Raper snagged a remarkable three in his
first over (nearly four!) to polish off game opponents.
LPCC 120-0 Pocklington 59 all out
LPCC’s best batting display of the season so far on a flat track at
local rivals Pocklington, with a fast outfield, together with wickets
for the spin trio proved to be too much for the home side. James Hanley
and Nathan Saltmer both retired on 32 with a cascade of boundaries to
their credit, while Ben Shingles played a sound anchor role with 28 not
out and Will Stephenson added late clout. Pocklington’s openers started
very well against occasionally wayward bowling, and were in the hunt at
41 without loss after 10 overs. Then Joe Shingles accurate left arm in
swing put the brakes on, before seven wickets shared between slow men
Ben Shingles, Toby Stephenson and Owen Raper polished Pock off, with
great credit to Jack Lakin, who dished up three smart stumpings, and
Will Stephenson whose spectacular catch and dive (not necessarily in
that order!) delighted spectators and team mates alike.
Heworth 41 all out LPCC 42-1
The
cup quarter final at Heworth saw Londesborough in the field for the
first innings for the only time this season so far. The home side soon
regretted their decision as wickets fell regularly, with excellent
bowling and fielding again to the fore. Nathan Saltmer took the honours
this time as reduced pace increased accuracy, with a particularly
effective and well thought out slower ball after being slogged for six
doing for Heworth’s best batsman. Most notable event of the innings was
a direct hit from third man by Lewis Medley after initially not
reacting, to prduce a great run out. After an alarm due to a short ball
connecting with a helmet, James and Will quickly knocked off the
required runs.
LPCC 84-4 Osbaldwick B 49-9
Unexpectedly tight bowling from the visitors restricted Londesborough to
a relatively low 84 for four, with some work required on pinching
singles to keep the scoreboard moving and on running between the wickets
in general. Nathan posted 25 and Will boosted the total with a quick 23
not out at the end. The visitors were less strong in batting than
bowling. More good fielding ( Lewis Beaton’s nonchalant catch at
mid-wicket and a Shingles run out) supported good bowling, with most
wickets shared between the Shingles and Lewis, to clinch the league
title.
Representative honours and a century!!
In
all, eight members of the LPCC under 13’s squad have played at least at
East Yorkshire level in this or last season. But the main mention must
go to LPCC skipper James Hanley who scored his maiden century, and did
it in the best possible style, for Yorkshire under 13’s in their match
against Cumbria. This is a fantastic achievement and fully deserved.
WELL DONE JIM!!!!
In 2010 we
want to win as many matches as we can; get all players involved and
enjoying the cricket; play as a team, working together; and play in the
right spirit, so we can be a credit to the club and to the game. So far,
so good!
