Season Review 2008
Londesborough Park Under 9's entered their
third season in great spirit and keen to follow on from their successful
predecessors, a number of whom have gone on to county representative
honours. Opening optimism proved to be well founded with the final
analysis following the end of a much interrupted season showing a best
ever result for quantity of matches and players and a very creditable
mark for quality.
Overall 9 out of 12 fixtures were won, with the A team finishing up
third in their league. The highlight was a very close though ultimately
unsuccessful match against strong local rivals
Pocklington. Remarkably, for the first time B team fixtures were
arranged, due to desperate demand for matches from the younger and less
experienced members of the squad, who were keen to test their new skills
in a competitive environment. The number of players started off as
large and grew as the season went on and word spread. The outstanding
bowler of the season was Ciaran Brooke, who returns to the under 9's
again in 2009. Lewis Medley could justifiably claim to be the top
all-rounder, particularly when thinking about the game in hand, and
Lawton Sanderson surprised himself as much as others by finishing with a
batting average of 76! Notable contributions were also made by cousins
Rory and Toby Stephenson, with Rory winning the end of season single
wicket competition at the end of August.
Most pleasing of all for the coaches was the enormous progress made by
all members of the squad, and the delight and enthusiasm shown by all
players throughout the season. Parents proved to be very effective taxi
drivers and assistant coaches even in the wet and miserable conditions
which seem to be a necessary part of any trip to Ovington. In contrast,
Londesborough Park's idyllic setting proved again to be the perfect
place to introduce youngsters to the thrill of willow on leather. Roll
on 2009. |
