With skipper Charlie Rook enjoying wedding
festivities, The Ginger One took over the reigns as Britcom sponsored
Londesborough Park 1st XI travelled north to Sheriff Hutton
Bridge aiming to bounce back after last week's setback against York.
The Park's batsmen were invited
to utilise the willow first on a good track but were soon facing an
uphill task as Big Bird and Sam Dodd were back in the hutch with 22 on
the board. Michael Drewery made a start but fell LBW for 14 before the
senior pros mounted a fightback. Neil Stephenson and Ian Hodson saw off
the opening attack of Hopper and Grose and built up a very useful
partnership of 96. Runs were difficult to come by as the change bowlers
gave nothing away and when the openers returned both batsmen fell victim
to Grose in consecutive overs for 42 apiece. The Park's middle and lower
order also found run scoring at a premium with only Blaster (13)
achieving double figures as the innings petered out on 155–8, Grose
claiming the bowling honours with 5 for 45 from 14 overs.
The final tally looked
inadequate but the Park took to the field with greater determination
than last week and set about making life difficult for the home
batsmen. Tom Eagling shared the new ball with Rich Foster and took the
prize scalp of Paul Scaling in his second over, pouched by Blaster
behind the sticks. The Bridge's cause was further hampered when Hugill
was run out for 8 and when both bowlers struck again shortly after, the
Park sensed that their total might not be inadequate after all as the
board registered 34 for 4. The Bridge's middle order pairing of Fisher
and Todd looked to take control and developed a painstaking partnership
of 44 in 20 as Fossy 'kept them honest' as Martin Brundle would say and
gave nothing away whilst Dan 'the man' Howard and the skipper followed
suit. Fisher's hour and a half stay at the crease was finally
curtailed, caught by Nelly Stephenson off the skipper's 2nd
over for 30 and Grose's prowess with the bat couldn't match his bowling
when he fell to Fossy for 2. James Beevers' catch ended Todd's
resistance to reward Eagling with a third wicket. 7 down became 9 down
as Eagling and Tissy struck again to set up a mouth watering finish, the
Bridge's tail having to survive 6 overs. Unfortunately for the Park
Howell and Naylor defended stoutly as the home side limped to 110 for
9.
An excellent return of 25 points
from a difficult fixture on paper and credit to Tissy and his troops for
a stella performance against strong opposition, particularly in the
field with Tom Eagling returning 4-37, Mark Tissiman 2-14 and Rich
Foster 2–30 from 19 overs.
Thanks to match ball sponsor
