Match Report
Just when you thought summer had
arrived the great British weather throws a seven and we're back to dull
and drizzle. Unperturbed the Britcom sponsored Londesborough Park 1st
XI packed their buckets and spades and headed for Costa del Hornsea,
looking to build on last week's victory.
After an hour and a half
deciding between a game of cricket and the bar the two skippers agreed
to make a start in light drizzle on the understanding that if conditions
worsened the bar would win. Charlie Rook won an important toss and
inserted the opposition who had one or two noticeable absentees from the
team sheet. With the contest reduced to 33 overs per side openers
Wallis and Clappison accumulated quickly and took a liking to the front
line bowling of Rich Foster and the Ginger One, scoring at around 6 an
over, which prompted the skipper to introduce himself and Dazzler Moody
into the attack. Clappison completed his fifty but Neil Stephenson's
bucket hands did for him off Dazzler's first over with the score on 81.
Fox failed to trouble the scorers as Pilot Nettleton, without the aid of
gloves, took the catch off Rook's bowling for the Park's second
success. The third was a little longer in coming as Wallis's patient
knock was rewarded with a half century before Rook skittled him for 51.
Only Pooley with 28 and Kirk (15 no) made any significant further
contributions to the Hornsea total as catches by Big Bird and Mark
Tissiman and a Blaster stumping kept the wickets column on the
scoreboard moving in an upwards direction. Rook claimed a five for and
Dazzler three as the innings closed on 168–8 including an overthrow or
two courtesy of an indiscretion from one of the bowlers (and it wasn't
the skipper!).
Gloom, drizzle and steamed up
bins aren't top of Big Bird's list of ideal batting conditions and so it
proved as a quickish delivery from Kirk went unseen and a return to the
hutch beckoned. Sam Dodd made a start but was undone by Knapton for 10
and Charlie Rook followed suit having scored 23. Neil Stephenson
remained undeterred and found an ally in the Ginger One (19) before he
became Kirk's second victim. In the gathering gloom Ian Hodson was
trapped LBW by Kirk but the Pilot and Nelly calmed any pavilion nerves
with a partnership of 71 as the Park cruised to a consecutive victory
with 3 overs to spare, Stephenson taking the batting accolades with 55
not out closely followed by the Pilot with an undefeated 36.
A bonus result for the Park in a
game played in excellent spirit and well officiated by the umpires. The
lack of action from all other fixtures in Division 1 results in the Park
moving up to 5th in the table and ready for the visit of York
2nds this weekend. Last week's match ball was kindly sponsored by R
Hornsey & Sons.
