Match report first 4 games 2010
Questions in the House, letters to the editor, calls
to 606 – what's happened to the Londesborough Park match reports?
Simple – the correspondent's been too busy keeping the local farming
fraternity a leads length away from going to the dogs (well, filling
their forms in) to put pen to paper. But fear not, we're back in full
swing and ready to fill the gaps, starting with a brief resumé of the
action to date.
The 1st XI's adventure into the higher
echelons of Division 1 commenced with a home fixture against the
seasiders from Bridlington. The visitors accumulated 189 for 4 on the
splendid Park ground, thanks in the main to an unbeaten 62 from
Tennant. The wickets were shared equally between Messrs Foster,
Tissiman, Rook and Eagling whilst Blaster got his victims tally off to a
good start with two catches. A debut victory was well within grasp,
particularly whilst Sam Medley was at the crease. Unfortunately he was
caught and bowled by Rudd for a well crafted 69 with the score on 153
and, despite an unbeaten 28 from the Ginger One, the Park fell just
short on 178 for 7. The next encounter was another home fixture against
Driffield Town 2nd XI. The Park's batsmen found runs a
little hard to come by and only Neil Stephenson (60), Pilot Nettleton
(33) and Charlie Rook (26) could make any headway against the Driffield
attack which was dominated by Long with 5-54. The Park's bowlers made
the opposition work hard for their victory which was secured with 4
balls to spare as Mutch held the innings together with an unbeaten 40.
Rich Foster and Mark Tissiman bowled the majority of the overs taking
two wickets apiece and ensuring a tight finish.
Next up was a trip to far from tropical Folkton &
Flixton when talented home batsmen Neil Elvidge chose an inappropriate
game to find his form with the willow and put the Park's attack to the
sword with an extremely hard hitting, unbeaten 132, ably supported by
Malthouse who also recorded a personal red inker of 84. The Park's
batsmen faced a daunting target of 281 for victory but, on a track
offering as much assistance to the bowlers as a radio on a motorbike ,
they produced a positive response, lead by skipper Charlie Rook with 88
and Neil Stephenson with 48. A final total of 214-6 secured a
creditable draw.
Last week the Park visited former Premier League side
Heworth and batted first on a track more akin to the Conference in
footballing parlance. With a significant number of last season's
winning formula absent for a number of reasons a mixture of youth and
experience produced a solid total of 167-6, the major contributors being
Charlie Rook and former 2nd XI skipper Ian Hodson with 45
apiece and an undefeated 23 from Dan 'the man' Howard. Batting proved
equally difficult for the home side and a typical opening spell from
Fossy, who took 3-63 in 20 overs, kept the opposition in check. However
skipper Wilkinson turned the contest on its head with an unbeaten 57
which saw his side home to a slightly flattering 6 wicket victory. Had
the catches been taken a different result may have ensued.
The school report to date would read competing well
against better quality opposition than faced before, team spirit good, a
learning curve for some, particularly the younger players, and in need
of a lucky break or two. This weekend's home fixture against strugglers
Ripon may provide the ideal opportunity for maximum points.
The 2nd XI's season started inauspiciously
under the guidance of new skipper Jonathan Croft as they were turned
over at Huntington. Only Michael Drewery (57) and Dazzler Moody (24)
seriously troubled the scorers as the Park failed to bat out their
allotted overs, finishing with 158. The opposition took their time in
reaching the target with Bradley contributing the bulk of the runs with
67.
An away trip to Cawood provided an ideal opportunity
to kick start the season and so it looked as the 8 man opposition was
skittled out for a mere 27, Dan 'the man' Howard claiming 4-7. Sadly
that was as good as it got as the weather intervened and no further play
was possible.
Back on home soil the pieces finally came together
against league newcomers Drax 2nd XI. The Park batsmen were
again guilty of failing to bat out the overs but solid efforts from Ian
Hodson at the top of the order with 49 and a later flurry from Tom
Williamson (28) produced a competitive total of 148. This proved way
too excessive for Drax as Dazzler and Eddie Salmon shot them out for 64.
Last week's contest against Carlton Towers 2nd
XI produced an equally emphatic victory as Robbie Sawyer claimed 5
victims as the visitors struggled to 114, made up principally by Lister
with 63. Skipper Croft (67 no) and Steve Dawson (32 no)
wasted little time in securing maximum points and moving the Park up the
table.
