Londesborough Park's final 1st XI fixture
of the season turned into something of a damp squib both on and off the
field. The inclement weather conditions reduced the contest against
Hull Zingari, who had lead division 1 for some time but had recently
tailed off and needed a victory to be in with a shout of promotion, to
28 overs per side.
Charlie Rook offered Zing Zing the opportunity to post a target on the
damp surface and, aided by some indifferent bowling, the visitors
accumulated 175-9 by the tea interval. Skipper Markham top scored with
45 whilst Thompson, Knowles, Hamson and Bunn all contributed 20 or
more. Rich Foster finished his bowling duties for the season with a
creditable return of 4-56 putting him amongst the leading wicket takers
in the division whilst Mark Tissiman increased his season's tally to 37
with 2 victims.
The
Park's response is best described as 'avoided defeat'. In more bowler
friendly conditions Big Bird registered 26, the skipper 18 and a red
inker from Blaster at the death (17 no) ensured the Park's run of
defeats was stemmed. Bunn caused most problems with the ball by
claiming 4-24 in 12 tidy overs as the Park's season petered out at 80-7.
In
summary division 1 proved to be a tough challenge for the Park. In
mitigation the squad was, on paper, probably not as strong as last
season's and the team acquitted themselves well in the first round of
matches. Several promising youngsters have made their debuts and spirit
within the camp has remained high. Time now to regroup and set the
sights on a top two place in division 2 in 2011.
Thanks to main sponsor Britcom International Limited, last week's match
ball sponsor Pryers Solicitors and all local businesses who have
sponsored balls throughout the season and to all the scorers, tea ladies
and of course the 'Last of the Summer Wine' gang for providing ground
facilities which were the envy of many visiting sides.
Many
of those connected with the Park will forget about what happened on the
pitch this Saturday as they enjoy the annual dinner dance and
presentation evening at the pavilion (a City win against Forest wouldn't
go amiss either).
