A good harvesting day was not quite what the doctor
ordered as Londesborough Park's 1st XI made their league
debut at Clifton Park to face top of the table York 2nd XI
who had a stronger than normal squad in attendance.
With
both captain and vice captain ticked as absent in the register Sam Dodd
took the reigns and was no doubt pleased to at least win the toss. Tom
Eagling and Dazzler Moody where duly entrusted with the new ball and the
simple job of keeping Lambert and run machine Dave Simpson at bay. The
latter survived a difficult chance early in his innings and proceeded to
dominate a first wicket partnership of 154. Rich Foster finally lifted
the gloom with the wicket of Lambert (47). Simpson completed his second
century against the Park but was finally undone by young debutant Greg
Drewery who found a way through – not a bad scalp for a first wicket in
division 1. Another product of the club's junior section James Beevers
joined the attack and picked up the wickets of Wackett and Nick Kay
courtesy of catches from the brothers Drewery. Richard Love fell to a
run out for just a single and the skipper and Beevers combined to see
off Flack for 7 as the bowling attack fought back but Andy Kay and
Mortimer added to the pain with a partnership of 51 off the last 5½
overs resulting in a rather foreboding total of 298-6.
No
sign of rain so Mike Drewery and Callum Robertson set about the Park's
reply. Unfortunately the York attack was, in the main, too good for the
under strength batting line up. Callum provided a ray of hope with 27
and Greg Drewery completed a personal milestone as he topped scored with
28. Cameos from Tom Eagling and Blaster at the end merely delayed the
inevitable as Nick Kay, Richard Love and Gareth Fenton brought a one
sided affair to an early conclusion, the Park dismissed for just 107.
The
doom and gloom merchants now have the Park odds on for relegation but
the Britcom sponsored 1st XI have four fixtures remaining to
retain their status in division 1 and the fat lady hasn't even found her
song sheet yet. Sheriff Hutton Bridge provide this Saturday's
opposition. Last week's match ball was kindly sponsored by KF Supplies.
