Match Report
Welton was the setting for the 2nd XI's
encounter, the Park's last visit to Common Lane being in the days of the
Pennant Alliance League. Having decked themselves out in their best
winter thermals, the players awaited their fate – the relative warmth of
the pavilion or exposure to the elements.
Jonathan Croft guessed correctly at the coin flipping contest, chose to
field and threw the ball to Dazzler who had manfully hauled himself from
his death bed suffering the after effects of tickly tonsils.
Unperturbed, Dazzler soon whipped out the top order before ex Park
player Shaun Wilson and Greg Fewster halted the Park's progress. A 4th
wicket partnership of 70 was finally curtailed by Steve Mudd who had
Wilson caught behind the sticks by George Drewery for a fairly laborious
21. The Welton & Brough middle order had no answer to Mudd's guile and
deception and fell away cheaply before Robbie Sawyer, clearly not
enjoying the benefits of a senior pro by having to bowl into the wind,
ended Fewster's resistance, spreading his stumps for 53. The innings
finally crawled over the line on 164 for 8, the bowling honours going to
Mudd with 4-24 and Dazzler 3-18 from 12 overs.
Following a fine spread and anti-frostbite hot drinks Greg Drewery and
Callum Robertson laid a solid platform at the top of the Park's reply
posting 39 before Terry Scott (no sign of June) bowled Drewery for 18.
Tom Medley and Callum then took control with a quickfire partnership of
55 in 8 overs, Robertson continuing his recent good form with 28. Steve
Dawson (19) and the skipper (20) assisted Tom to his half century as the
Park achieved their target within 26 overs, Medley finishing undefeated
on 56.
This
weekend the 2nd XI host Sheriff Hutton, looking to
consolidate 4th position in the table, and hoping to improve
on their catching techniques!
