The 2nd XI visited promotion chasing Civil
Service with a youthful line up supported by skipper Jonathan Croft and
the evergreen George Drewery.
The
Park took to a rather damp field first and had to wait a while for a
breakthrough as openers Hanley and Phelps made light of the sticky
wicket. Dan 'the man' Howard claimed the first scalp and bowled 12 tidy
overs, conceding just 27. A solid partnership between Hanley and
Chisholm saw the Service beyond the 100 mark before Stephen Croft's leg
spin accounted for Chisholm and No 4 Taylor in quick succession. Hanley
finally perished for a hard earned 57 courtesy of Greg Drewery who also
accounted for Lowen but not before he had completed his half century.
James Beevers chipped in with the wicket of Sherlock (36) and Greg did
for Heath as the Service innings closed on a satisfying 225-7. The Park
fielders stuck to their task well taking 6 catches in far from ideal
conditions.
A
good start was needed by the Park in reply and that's just what they
didn't get as Greg and Micheal Drewery, Tom Williamson and Liam Barlow
were all back in the sheds with less than 40 on the board. Amongst the
mayhem James Beevers stood firm, adding 31 with Tom Noble for the 5th
wicket before the latter departed. Steve Dawson contributed 27 with
Beevers but when James's excellent knock was ended by Owen and captain
Croft and son came and went, the Park stared defeat in the face on 166-9
with 9 overs remaining and Dan 'the man' and 'flashing blade' George
Drewery at the crease. Dan's nothing to lose approach saw him pepper the
pavilion at regular intervals with some quality big hitting, much to the
delight of his teammates. George played the anchor role as the board
moved ever closer to and finally displayed the winning target of 226,
Dan finishing unbeaten on 51 and George on 21.
An
excellent result for the Park prior to a mouthwatering fixture at home
to Pocklington 2nds this Saturday.
