The
2nd XI completed their season with a home fixture against
Welton & Brough 2nd XI and celebrated a resounding victory
and a personal triumph for one of their up and coming younger members.
The
Park put bat to willow first and lost the services of Sam Dodd early in
the piece. Welton, who had won their previous 5 matches, kept a tight
rein on the batsmen but had to wait for another breakthrough as James
Hanley and Steve Dawson upped the run rate. When James was trapped LBW
for 38 it was 'red bus time' as the visitors picked up another wicket in
quick succession, that of Michael Drewery who was bowled by Terry
Scott. Dawson's belligerent knock of 68 was ended by the same bowler
and Dan 'the man' Howard couldn't repeat his heroics of last Saturday,
resorting to a cameo of 12 on this occasion. Scott's 'carry on' also
accounted for Kieswetter Drewery and Jack Sowersby before Tom Medley
(37) and Skipper Jonathan Croft (22 no) hit out towards the end of the
innings to produce a creditable 208-9.
The
visitors' reply was kept in check by tidy spells from Dan 'the man' and
Tom Medley as they registered 44-1 in 15 overs. Following the drinks
break 13 year old leg spinner Stephen Croft was introduced into the
attack with devastating effect. The Welton batsmen had no answer to
Croft who claimed 7-22 in 9.4 overs. Father and son combo Michael and
George Drewery chipped in to dismiss Clark and it was smiles all round
as the visitors were dismissed for just 90.
A
satisfying end to the campaign which sees the Park's second string
finish 3rd in Division 5A, pipping local rivals Pocklington.
Skipper Croft extends his thanks to all the players, tea ladies and
umpires for a very enjoyable season, to the 'Last of the Summer Wine'
team for the excellent playing facilities at the Park and to the match
ball sponsor The Red Lion.
