The
Londesborough Park bandwagon finally moved out of first gear last
Saturday at Norwood Park, Beverley. First appearances of the season by
Ian Hodson and Rich Foster resulted in a more experienced line up whilst
James Beever's runs in the second string were rewarded with an
opportunity in the 1st XI.
Openers Big Bird and Neil Stephenson fared well against the opening
attack, scoring at 5 runs an over, before a change of pace did for Big
Bird, caught for 25. Skipper Charlie Rook started to work the ball
around but lost the services of Stephenson (37) with the score on 83 as
Matt Smith claimed his second victim. Sam Medley joined the skipper,
the pairing adding 36 for the 3rd wicket before Rook fell to
old adversary Pete Parnaby for 25. Beevers added 19 as Medley forced
the pace and the 'Ginger One' continued his good form with an unbeaten
15. Smith finally ended Medley's key innings on 53 and the Britcom
sponsored Park's hopes of a first 200 plus score were thwarted by
Parnaby's miserly spell of 14 overs for 39. Fortunately for the Park
his 15th and last over went for 12 as the Park produced an
identical total to the previous week, finishing the rain reduced innings
on 199 for 5.
The
Beverley reply started at a concerning pace, 26 runs being conceded off
only 4 overs. Fortunately Dazzler's dismissal of Tim Smith stemmed the
flow and Tissiman produced a tidy spell of 13 overs but the Park failed
to follow up the initial breakthrough as Wilson and Olly Grantham
produced a potential match winning 2nd wicket partnership of
100. Skipper Rook turned to the spinners and Sam Medley finally
combined with Rook, donning the gloves in the absence of Blaster, to end
Wilson's very steady knock with 127 on the board. Youngster Greg
Drewery then found a way through Grantham's defence to leave the home
side requiring 65 from 10 overs for victory. Beverley's middle order
had no answer to the spin twins as 4 wickets fell for the addition of
just 22 runs to set up a tense finish. The Park's bowlers held their
nerve with Medley producing a man of the match spell of 3-40, supported
by Drewery with 3-16 as the reply was restricted to 184 for 7 resulting
in a much needed 25 point haul for the Park.
The
Park entertain York 3rd XI this weekend hoping to build on
this improved performance. This week's match ball was clearly chosen
for the spinners, sponsored by R Hornsey & Sons, a partner of the firm
known to have occasionally spun the ball.
