Warm, sunny conditions for the first game of the season – unheard of.
Well the new cricket season is well and truly upon us and Londesborough
Park's 1st XI travelled to 'Watership Down' to commence their
Division 2 campaign against Tadcaster. An influx of rabbits had put the
game in doubt but strenuous efforts by the Brewers ensured the contest
went ahead – the Park probably wished it hadn't!
Skipper Charlie Rook selected a mix of youth and experience and opened
the innings with the willow courtesy of Big Bird and Neil Stephenson. A
steady start belied the carnage that was to follow. The first wicket
fell with 24 on the board before Clark's spell of 5 for 19, supported by
Downey with 3 for 31, ripped through the Park's attack with only meagre
resistance. Only Stephenson, the returning Ben Lewis and Dazzler Moody
recorded double figures as the innings capitulated to 85 all out, the
home side benefitting from some indifferent umpiring on occasions.
A
wicket apiece for Mark Tissiman and Dazzler in the first 2 overs of
Tadcaster's reply offered a glimmer of hope as did Tissy's second wicket
which had the Brewers rocking at 14 for 3. However Day and Smith
ensured no opening day shock as they reached their target inside 20
overs.
A
bad day at the office for the Park who will be looking to bounce back
against Malton & Old Malton.
Londesborough Park 1st XI 85 (P Clark 5-19, P Downey 3-31)
