String of beads did not prove to be a happy hunting ground for Britcom
sponsored Londesborough Park's 1st XI last Saturday when they
fell to a 5 wicket defeat against Whitkirk.
The
home ground staff had taken the unusual decision to water the pitch on
Friday then leave the covers on. Consequently the result of the toss,
in favour of the hosts, had an immediate impact. However stand in
captain Rich Foster would have hoped for a rather more productive start
to the Park's innings than a depressing vision on the scoreboard of 12
for 3 after only 5 overs. Opener Big Bird dug in against some hostile
deliveries and eventually found support from James Beevers who
contributed a flurry of boundaries before departing for 26. Big Bird
(24) held up one end for 20 overs until he was run out leaving the Park
struggling on 68-5. Youngsters Greg Drewery and Tom Medley then bailed
the innings out with a splendid 6th wicket partnership of 82,
making full use of the lightening fast outfield. Greg eventually fell
for 39 but Tom produced his best knock for the 1st XI,
remaining undefeated on 74 including one humungous six and gained solid
support from Ian Hodson (20 no) as the innings concluded on 206-6.
The
Park's bowling attack was limited by the absence of skipper Charlie Rook
and the 'Ginger One' as well as keeper Chris Barlow but Dazzler Moody
and Rich Foster kept the run rate well in check for 16 overs, including
the dismissal of Tubby (weight unknown) for 17. Two quick wickets for
Foster and young spin bowler Stephen Croft reduced the hosts to 87 for 3
before Murphy (54) and Handley (48) virtually put the game to bed with a
partnership of 105. Both eventually fell to Dazzler and Sam Medley
respectively but it was too little too late as Walker saw Whitkirk home
in the 42nd over.
A
battling performance form the Park who will look for a more positive
outcome this weekend at home to Tadcaster Magnet. Credit to stand in
keeper Ian Hodson who claimed two catches, a stumping and only conceded
3 byes. Thanks to match ball sponsor Holmemade Bakery.
