U13's win the cup

In an exciting final against York CC held at Woodhouse Grange on Sunday, Londesborough Park won the Hirepoint York and District Junior Cricket Association under 13 Cup by six wickets in the penultimate over.

Chasing 106 to win in twenty overs, Londesborough suffered an early blow when Ben Shingles was bowled in the first over by the impressive Williams.  Stephen Croft gave impetus to the innings, punishing short bowling from Brewster with some lashing cuts, before being deceived by Williams (and apparently the sightscreen), offering a simple chance to ‘keeper Toby Pratt, and leaving Londesborough in a little bother at 19 for 2 in the fifth over.

The decisive partnership of the match followed between skipper Will Stephenson and Nathan Saltmer.  Stephenson hit five boundaries in a quick fire 31 before retiring, and Saltmer, in a very well judged innings, included a six and 3 fours before also being forced to retire.  These two took the score to 69 after just ten overs.  With further lusty blows from Joe Shingles, Londesborough reached 99 for 2 with four overs left and just seven runs required to lift the trophy.  A double wicket maiden bowled by Taylor followed by just two runs from the next over raised the tension again, but Lewis Medley and the unflappable Charlie Cartwright remained calm as apoplexy on the boundary became a distinct possibility.  Cartwright serenely clipped a four in the penultimate over and then smashed the next ball through the covers for a splendid win by a team defeated just once in 2010.

Earlier York had started well, with Brewster driving very strongly, well supported by Pratt, both retiring unbeaten on 30.  Londesborough’s five bowlers all performed well, with Joe Shingles, Nathan Saltmer and Stephen Croft outstanding.   A smart stumping by Jack Lakin was the only wicket to fall, but York could not accelerate after a good start, restricted by the Londesborough bowlers, backed up by aggressive fielding.  Toby Stephenson patrolled the boundary and both Owen Raper and Toby Guest pulled off good stops.  This was a great team effort, and after losing finals at both under 13 and under 11 in 2009, much deserved silverware for the Londesborough Park juniors.

Season Update

The Star Inn Sancton sponsored junior section continue to make good progress with the under 13s remaining unbeaten thus far.  Against Dunnington Yorkshire bowler Freddie Collins' pace caused initial problems to the Park's batsmen and his own wicket keeper but, having seen him off, James  Hanley and Stephen Croft both reached 30 undefeated in a total of 110-1.  Ben Shingles made up for his disappointment with the bat as he combined with keeper Jack Lakin to engineer a brilliant run out followed by an even better catch to dismiss Collins.  Owen Raper took 2 quality catches and good bowling all round restricted the opposition to 51-5.

Hanley and Croft were in equally good form with the bat against Selby.  James struck 7 boundaries in his 30 and Stephen, having worked out how to play the ultra slow 'lobs' of Stewart and remaining patient courtesy of an even slower rate, held the innings together with a similar score.  Early wickets and tight bowling, particularly from Charlie Cartwright,  put the Park in total control as Selby could only muster 44-6 in reply.

A weak Bolton Percy side fielding just 9 men were no match for the Park as Nathan Saltmer and Will Stephenson were the batsmen to retire at 30.  Joe Shingles bowled with class to earn 2 wickets and Jack Craven's huge (sometimes too huge!) away swingers were also rewarded with 2 wickets.  Stephen Croft's leggies wrapped up the tail as the opposition was dismissed for just 24.

Congratulations to James Hanley and Stephen Croft who have been selected for the Yorkshire under 13s A and B squads and to Lewis Medley and Toby Stephenson who have been selected for the East Riding under 11s team.

2009 Junior season review

The junior cricketers at Londesborough Park have just completed the most successful season in the clubs long history. Whilst the club’s juniors have regularly reached league play-offs, cup semi finals and finals since they joined the York and District Junior Cricket League, the results this season have surpassed everyone’s wildest hopes and expectations.

Despite a difficult start to the season when the team was severely disrupted by school exams the under 15s bounced back to finish their league strongly with excellent performances against Osbaldwick and Woodhouse Grange.

The under 13s completed their League programme unbeaten and finished as champions of the East division from which they subsequently progressed to the League Championship play-off final against York following a 9 wicket semi-final victory over Acomb (West division champions). The under 13s also qualified for the plate semi final following convincing victories over Wheldrake and Osbaldwick. In the semi final they met Acomb (once again) and were unfortunate to lose in a ‘bowl-off’ due to the match being abandoned because of heavy rain when Londesborough were in a winning position.

Londesborough’s under 11s were extremely unlucky to lose their Cup Final by the narrowest of margins when they finished level on scores with York but lost due to conceding one more wicket than their opponents. The u11s also emulated the under 13s by finishing joint champions of their (East) division thus qualifying for the League semi-final playoff against Ovington. A comfortable victory over Ovington brought them head-to-head once more with York and after three attempts to play the match (due to bad weather) York once again got the better of the spirited Londesborough youngsters.

After all these ‘near misses’, the under 9s showed their older club mates how to do it properly. They finished runners-up in their division but saved some of their best cricket of the season for the play-offs at Osbaldwick where they finished as League Champions when deservedly beating two previously unbeaten teams (Sheriff Hutton Bridge and Clifton Alliance).

In addition to these team successes, an ever increasing list of Londesborough juniors picked up representative honours this season. Ten Players represented the club for East Yorkshire at various age groups; Eddie Salmon (u14), Greg Drewery (u13), James Hanley and Stephen Croft (u13 and u12), William Stephenson (u12), Nathan Saltmer (u12 and u11), Ben Shingles, Joe Shingles and Billy Salmon (u11), Lewis Medley (u10). Four of the boys (Greg Drewery, Stephen Croft, James Hanley and Nathan Saltmer ) were also selected to play for Yorkshire in their respective age groups this season and Ben and Joe Shingles both produced excellent performances when invited to play for the Taverners under 11s Select Team against Yorkshire under 11s. The depth of strength of the junior section at Londesborough Park is currently at an all time high and there are several younger exciting prospects in the pipeline.

All things considered, a tremendously successful season and I expect the senior players at Londesborough will be looking anxiously over their shoulders at the talent soon to be challenging for their places in the first and second elevens.

Junior coaching will be resuming again in the New Year and we are particularly keen to see an influx of players suitable to play in the under 9s League in 2010 (school year 3 & 4) in order to continue the clubs incredible success in 2009.
