Londesborough Park’s 1st XI, sponsored by Britcom International, welcomed Yapham to the Park last Saturday to revitalise a fixture from past seasons. In a one sided contest it was the visitors who took the spoils as the Park’s batting left a deal to be desired.
Park skipper Greg Drewery decided to bowl first and, after a steady partnership of 30 between Ashley Cattle and Tom Connell, Mark Tissiman intervened with a return catch to dismiss the former for 19. With the score on 50 fellow opening bowler Tom Sowersby came to the party when he trapped Connell LBW for 18 and followed up instantly to send Barry Pearson packing without troubling the scorers courtesy of a catch behind the sticks by the skipper. Yapham regrouped and added a further 46 before Martin Pearson’s quickfire innings of 34 was cut short by a run out engineered by Steve Dawson. Yapham’s captain and gloveman Jack Holman entered the fray and swung matters firmly in his troops’ favour with an unbeaten 75 off 99 balls including 9 fours and 3 maximums. He gained support from Alex Brown (19) and S Hardwick (22) as the visitors retired to the sheds at the tea interval having posted 213 for 7. Sowersby was the Park’s most successful bowler with 4 for 68 with Ryan Curtis being the other wicket taker.
The Park’s response was, to say the least, disappointing. Three wickets fell with the score on 7 as Edward Smith, Ben Shingles and James Beevers hit the showers early. Skipper Drewery became Jonathan Flint’s third victim with the score on 18 and Stuart Wainwright claimed his second of the day when he pinged Tom Eagling LBW for a dozen. 30 for 5 became 39 for 7 as Michael Drewery and Mark Tissiman fell victim to Flint and Wainwright respectively. Flint completed his five fer with the dismissal of Sowersby and Steve Dawson’s single handed resistance was halted by Stuart Wainwright. The Park were finally put out of their misery with just 75 on the board as the visitors completed a significant 138 run victory.
A day to forget for the Park who were none the less grateful for the match ball sponsorship kindly provided by Hagstons Carpets.
Yapham 213-7 (J Holman 75 no, M Pearson 34, T Sowersby 4-68) Londesborough Park 1st XI 75 (S Dawson 26, J Flint 5-34, S Wainwright 3-35)
The Park’s 2nd XI, sponsored by the Red Lion, fared little better than the 1st XI when they headed west to Cawood.
With 10 men at his disposal skipper Darren Moody wisely inserted the opposition and encountered an opening partnership of 47 between David Topping and Stuart Baxter, the latter eventually departing LBW for 26. Tom Williamson did for Jack Liddell in similar fashion and demon bowler George Drewery continued his wicket taking exploits by bowling Topping for 31. A fourth wicket partnership of 68 between Tom Russell (46) and Keith Towndrow (47) put the hosts in control, both eventually perishing to catches by keeper Chris Barlow off Lucas Stephenson deliveries. Two further wickets for Stephenson and Moody stemmed the run flow as the visitors finally posted 204 for 9, Matthew Stephens adding 26 at the back end of the innings.
The Park made a positive reply until Ian Hodson (16) was castled by Towndrow with the score on 36. That was about as good as it got as only John Williamson (24) and Tom Williamson (10) mustered double figures. Towndrow had a field day, taking 6 for 25 as the Park collapsed to 86 all out off just 21 overs.
The 2nd XI will be hoping for a significant improvement this Saturday when they host Dunnington 2nd XI who sit just above them in the table. Thanks to XYZ Printers for their generous sponsorship of the match ball.
