The second team finally got their season up and running this Saturday with a home fixture against York IV. The year may have changed, but the skippers ability at the toss remains constant, as LPCC were invited to bat on a brand new track. Openers Neil Stephenson and Ben Shingles built a solid foundation, seeing off the new ball. Stephenson scoring 25 and falling before drinks. With 8 wickets in hand at the drinks break Park looked to increase the scoring rate and when Edward Smith entered, after the departure of Sam Dodd, the score started ticking over nicely. Edward and James Beevers put on 82 for the 4th wicket, Edward with a run a ball 56. Park were looking at a score of around 200 but good bowling from Macfall put the brakes on. James Beevers falling 2 short of a deserved half century. Park finally reached a competitive score of 177 for 8, with Macfall taking 5-24 at the death.
The second innings started with a bang as York opener Mendham played the only way he knows and looked to attack from the start. However Joe Shingles proved too good, bowling Mendham with an inswinging delivery. James Beevers removed no.3 Swaddle thanks to a good catch from Ciaran Brooke. Ciaran then got himself in on the act getting the wicket of Ahmed. The York side lacked strength in the batting line-up and when Wiliamson removed opener Jones with the score on 66 for 4, Park were sensing victory. Ciaran then took 2 wickets in 2 balls, narrowly missing the outside edge for a hat-trick and York were 70 for 6 with 20 overs left. The next 20 overs will not go down in history as the most entertaining passage of cricket, York managing another 18 runs. Wickets did come for new recruit Rhys Duerden and 14 year old Jake Hemsworth, his first ball in senior cricket bowling Yorks number 11. Opposition skipper Hall returned to the crease, after retiring hurt, and with M.Scurry batted out the last 9 overs for a draw.
