Report – 21/06/14 – Whitkirk v LPCC 2nds
The second 11 started the day pretty concerned about the prospects of the day cricket. With both the regular skipper and vice-captain missing it was up to Mike ‘one knee’ Drewery to skipper a fairly depleted, but by no means inexperienced, second 11 away at Whitkirk.
The day started well with a victory at the toss, not as hard as Captain Williamson makes it look, and LPCC elected to bat. Returning retiree Tim Stephenson started the innings with Ben Shingles and after a very early wicket LPCC’s skipper was definitely worried but not for long. Youngsters Harry Gamble and the opener Ben Shingles put on just shy of 100 until Ben gave his wicket away for 47. Harry was soon to follow, clearly missing his batting partner, on an equally excellent 46 bringing stand in skipper to the crease with a member of the old guard, Sam Dodd. Some fairly loose bowling fromWhitkirk brought about quite a few boundaries and despite Sam Dodd retiring hurt Londesborough raced to a grand total of 246 from their 45, the bulk of the remaining runs slogged by the Skipper (75).
An excellent tea was followed by an excellent fielding and bowling display by the Park, sealing the conclusive 164 run victory.
Rhys ‘Babybell’ Duerdon was surprisingly fresh after his trip to the test match on Friday and grabbed his first ever 5-for forLondesborough (5-38). He really is a good chucker that lad! The remaining wickets were taken by Mike Drewery (4) and Ben Shingles (1) without much fight back from an equally depleted Whitkirk side. A special mention must go to the excellent fielding both by the regulars and the season debutants (Tim Stephenson, Mark Saltmer, Nick Gamble and Jacob Todd) and a special mention to Nick Gamble for taking an excellent catch off the Skippers bowling, up the order next week I reckon.
LPCC beat Whitkirk by 164 runs and grabbed their first 30 points of the season. A surprisingly good day’s cricket considering the team was 5 strong the Wednesday before the game.
