Londesborough Park Cricket Club News story

Match reports 7th August

08 Aug 2021

Londesborough Park’s first XI travelled to the seaside on Saturday to face Hornsea, and a jolly nice time was had by all. Invited to bat first Londesborough got off to a great start, notching up 61 before the first wicket fell. Tom Jennings continued to add to the score, supported by Charles Rook in a 2nd wicket partnership of 86, before being caught on 68. The third wicket came relatively quickly, but from then on Hornsea couldn’t find any success with the ball. Charles was joined at the crease by Ben Shingles, the pair frustrating the home side with an excellent partnership of 107. Both remained unbeaten on 97 and 33 respectively when the allotted 50 overs came to an end, the score now totalling an impressive 268, aided and abetted by 53 extras.

Londesborough’s defence of their total started well, bagging their first wicket with just 22 runs on the board. Wickets came fairly regularly after that thanks to James Beevers (2-29), Martin Pearson (3-40), Scott Hardwick (2-27), Ben Shingles (2-12) and Joe Shingles (1-38). Hornsea subsequently found themselves on 93-8, only Jonathan Fisher really troubling the scorers with 42 runs. With eight down, Joe Butterworth (61*) and Luke Brightmore (26) improved things considerably for the home side as they started to put together a partnership of 74. A brief stoppage for rain looked like it might spoil Londesborough’s chances of the outright win, but when they were able to re-start they finally managed to bag the important 9th wicket. The 10th then came immediately as Martin Pearson took 2 wickets in 2 balls to seal the win.

LPCC: 268-3 (Tom Jennings 68, Charles Rook 97*, Ben Shingles 33*)

HOR: 167-10 (Jonathan Fisher 42, Joe Butterworth 61*, Luke Brightmore 26, James Beevers 2-29, Martin Pearson 3-40, Scott Hardwick 2-27, Ben Shingles 2-12)

Londesborough Park 2nds were at home against Tadcaster Magnets and helped themselves to a well-deserved 30 points. Having won the toss, the Park elected to have first use of the ball – a decision that did not disappoint. All five Londesborough bowlers produced economical and accurate spells, preventing Tadcaster from settling into any sort of rhythm. The wickets came regularly, and Tadcaster found themselves all out on just 73 runs after 30 overs. Jack Sowersby (4-24), Darren Moody (2-1) and Tom Councell (2-16) shared the majority of the wickets between them, with Harvey Laverack (1-18) and Matt Ware (1-5) cleaning up the rest.

The run chase was never really in doubt as Lucas Stephenson (20) and Michael Drewery (44*) got the measure of the bowling and motored to 61 runs before Lucas lost his wicket. The target of 74 soon came about and Londesborough took the 30 points in the first ball of the 14th over.

TAD: 73-10 (Jack Sowersby 4-24, Tom Councell 2-16), Darren Moody 2-1)

LPCC: 74-1 (Michael Drewery 44*, Lucas Stephenson 20)

The Wednesday night team faced Kelfield this week. With the overs reduced to 16, Kelfield posted 119-5 in their innings, mostly down to 64 from Jonny Wright. In addition to a run out the wickets were shared equally between Tom Councell, Ollie Fiddler, Tom Williamson and Harry Snelling. Londesborough batsmen Joel Taylor (55), Toby Williamson (32) and Joe Franklin (13) batted well in an attempt to chase down the score, the home side losing only 3 wickets, but simply ran out of overs before they could cross the finish line.

Londesborough Park would like to thank team sponsors Britcom International Ltd, Michael Roe Motor Engineer and The Paper Shop, and this week’s match ball sponsors Post Haste Printers LTD and The Paper Shop Market Weighton.
